"How do you teach them about surrender, though?"

- How do you teach them about surrender, though? They’re so young… My older boy wants to join the military, and it’s been really hard for the younger one to accept that his brother won’t be home for a while. He’s been really struggling with it.

- That must be so hard for him. I’m sure you feel it too… How much longer does he have in school before he leaves?

- He has two more years. And you’re right… as a mother, I always want my kids to pursue their dreams—and if this is what he wants, I want to support his decision. But even I also struggle with it. Not just surrendering to the fact that he’ll be leaving us, which is already hard enough, but also knowing he might face dangerous situations… you know?

- I completely hear you. You know, I don’t think surrender is something that can be simply taught. As much as you may try to help someone, they still have to go through the depths of it themselves… When we find ourselves running into the same patterns over and over again, to the point that we have no choice but to accept that there’s truly nothing we can change, we’ll start looking inward and realize we have to change ourselves. That’s when we learn to surrender.
